Crash Character Analysis

The film Crash is about a wide assortment of individuals of various races in Los Angeles, California and how they all intertwine with one another. In the film Crash there are numerous characters that start to change their ways all through the film. One individual in the film that has changed the most is the character Sandra Bullock plays her name is Jean Cabot.The reason being the reason she has changed is on the grounds that one night subsequent to eating, her and spouse Rick Cabot are vehicle jacked at gunpoint by two dark men in a renowned and well off condition of California. From this experience she is sincerely scarred and generalizations each race that isn't before her face. In one scene of the film, the Cabot’s are getting new secures their home after they were seized. The man who is changing the locks on the entryway is a Hispanic male who is generalized by Jean in view of his shaved head, pants around his base, and his tattoos. Janet comes down the stairs into the kitchen and finds that Maria didn't void out the dishwasher of all the spotless dishes from the prior night. Janet lashes out on Maria each possibility she gets and in the end fires her.During the finish of the film, Janet Cabot has an acknowledgment of her conduct and activities towards any individual who isn't a similar shading as her. One scene of the film Janet is seen chatting on the telephone with her companion of ten years about every day occasions and parts of the bargain s. After the discussion has finished, Janet tumbles down the steps and can’t move. Janet called her companion of ten years to come help yet she said that she was to caught up with getting a back rub and would not have the option to come. Page to Podium Oscar Reads, Part 1 Though books are totally our bag here at Book Riot, we have a soft spot in our hearts for any medium of good storytelling. This includes TV and movies and theater and essays, etc., etc. (By “we” of course, I just mean me, but I’m pretty sure that most of my Riot colleagues would agree to a large extent, if our Beyond the Books feature every month is any indication.) Around this time of year in particular, I nerd out hardcore. Why? Because it’s Oscar season, of course! My book reading takes a serious nose dive in favor of spending long Saturdays in movie theaters, gorging myself on every. Single. Nominated. Movie. Every one of them. I’ve seen all 53 films nominated for a golden man statue this year, even the really random movies nominated for Best Visual Effects (Oh hai there, Prometheus, you nightmare conjurer, you!) and Best Sound Mixing (RAWR, James Bond. RAWR.). Quite a few films this year have a solid connection to our book friends, though not as many as in some past years. A solid ten movies have literary origins, and of the nine nominated for Best Picture, over half of them five to be exact descended from book form. And with the exception of Beasts of the Southern Wild  and The Sessions, all of the nominees for Best Adapted Screenplay are based on books. Below we break down the book-based nominees for Best Picture and our not-at-all-technical guesses as to their chances of winning. Keep an eye out for Part Two later this week where I look at all the rest of the nominees who have literary roots. Argo 7 Nominations (Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor Alan Arkin, Best Adapted Screenplay Chris Terrio, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Original Score) Though Argo is getting a lot of attention for the nomination it didn’t garner (for Ben Afflecks job as director), it does have a lot of potential to pick up a few awards. The book basis for Argo is a portion of the memoir A Master of Disguise by Antonio J. Mendez and the article “The Great Escape” by Joshuah Bearman; there is now a book version of the movie available, though it was published just in advance of the movie’s release. It’s already picked up four wins for Best Film at major awards shows, and at least four adapted screenplay wins, including at the Writer’s Guild of America Awards. Arkin has also picked up a couple of wins, and a handful more nominations for his performance, but in the major categories, Argo’s best shot at taking home a little gold man is in the Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay categories. Les Misérables 8 Nominations (Best Picture, Best Actor Hugh Jackman, Best Supporting Actress Anne Hathaway, Best Original Song, Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Sound Mixing, Best Production Design) Book turned musical turned movie, Les Misérables is a powerhouse of a film, with epic vocals by both acting nominees, but especially by Hathaway, who probably earned her nomination purely based on the heartrending rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream.” Anyone else disappointed that this won’t be the song performed during the Oscar ceremony? But we will get to see a performance of “Suddenly,” the films contribution to Best Original Song, though it’s anyone’s guess who will be performing it since it was sung multiple times during the film. My hope is for Hugh Jackman as Valjean; that man does know how to work a stage. Best shot for Oscar? Hathaway, without question. Life of Pi 11 Nominations (Best Picture, Best Director Ang Lee, Best Adapted Screenplay David Magee, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Visual Effects, Best Original Score, Best Original Song) Based on the critically-acclaimed 2001 novel of the same name by Yann Martel, director Ang Lee has said that this story as written by Martel was “unfilmable,” and its journey to the screen would support that assertion. But a few choices by Lee that are being recognized with Oscar nods made Life of Pi the most successful of the Best Picture nominees at the box office. In part, his decision to shoot in 3D by far the best way to see it contributed to the recognition in Visual Effects, Cinematography, Production Design, and Film Editing, though each of these nominees is well-deserving without the 3D enhancement. The film is a spectacular visual feast, and it is in these categories it has the best chance of winning. As an “unfilmable” book, David Magee’s adaptation hasn’t garnered as many wins as one might expect, though a win for Ang Lee as Best Director would not be unsurprising considering the massive scope and execution in bringing Pi to life. Lincoln 12 Nominations (Best Picture, Best Director Steven Spielberg, Best Actor Daniel Day-Lewis, Best Supporting Actor Tommy Lee Jones, Best Supporting Actress Sally Field, Best Adapted Screenplay Tony Kushner, Best Original Score, Best Sound Mixing, Best Production Design, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Film Editing) Topping the list of films with the most nominations, Steven Spielberg reportedly spent 12 years researching this historical drama based on the final four months of Lincoln’s presidency, focusing on his fight to pass the 13th Amendment to abolish slavery. The film is based in part on Doris Kearns Goodwin’s Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, published in 2005. Let’s be honest: Daniel Day-Lewis has the Best Actor race on lockdown, so let’s focus on categories where the race is a little less clear. In a tough field, the Best Picture and Best Director nomination for Spielberg could make it an interesting run. It is certainly considered a favorite in both categories, as in each of the supporting acting categories, and the Academy does prefer their historical dramas, particularly those directed by Spielberg (see also Schindler’s List, Saving Private Ryan, Munich and War Horse). There’s major potential to sweep in the major categories here. Silver Linings Playbook 8 Nominations (Best Picture, Best Actor Bradley Cooper, Best Actress Jennifer Lawrence, Best Supporting Actor Robert De Niro, Best Supporting Actress Jacki Weaver, Best Director David O. Russell, Best Adapted Screenplay David O. Russell, Best Film Editing) Silver Linings Playbook is the only one of the Best Picture nominees to capture what’s known as the “Big Five” nominations in Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Screenplay (either Original or Adapted). To top that off, it also garnered nominations in the two supporting acting categories as well. With that kind of resume, it would be expected that the film based on the 2008 novel by Matthew Quick would be a favorite in most of those categories. That is surprisingly not the case, though Jennifer Lawrence has won the most awards for the film leading up to the Oscars. In such a jam-packed year, Russell’s film isn’t running away from the field, though it could have the potential to upset favorites like Lincoln and Argo. I also like David O. Russell’s chances to win for Adapted Screenplay; it could be the Academy’s way of recognizing him without snubbing Spielberg in the Directing category. Other bookish Best Picture notes: Beasts of the Southern Wild is based on a one-act play,  Juicy and Delicious by Lucy Alibar, that is now available in print. Zero Dark Thirty, though not technically adapted from any one printed source, one account of the raid and assassination of Osama Bin Laden, No Easy Day, was published in 2012. Mosasaurs The Deadly Marine Reptiles

Although they werent technically dinosaurs, the marine reptiles known as mosasaurs hold a unique place in paleontological history: it was the discovery of a specimen of Mosasaurus in 1764, in a Dutch quarry, that galvanized scientists into the realization that species could become extinct (and that the earth used to be populated by some very strange creatures well before Biblical times). Mosasaurus (lizard from the Meuse River) was soon named by the renowned naturalist Georges Cuvier, and the general name mosasaur attached to other members of this ancient family. In evolutionary terms, mosasaurs were distinct from three other famous groups of marine reptiles, ichthyosaurs (fish lizards), long-necked plesiosaurs, and short-necked pliosaurs. These sleek, reptilian predators may have been responsible for the extinction of the ichthyosaurs by the end of the Cretaceous period (not necessarily by eating them, but by out-competing them for food), and their quick, agile, hydrodynamic builds gave plesiosaurs and pliosaurs a run for their money. Essentially, mosasaurs ruled the seas for about 20 million years, until the K/T Extinction expunged most giant reptiles (and all the marine varieties) from the face of the earth 65 million years ago. Mosasaur Evolution While it would be tempting to speculate that mosasaurs evolved from ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs, this doesnt appear to be the case. The recent discovery of the small, amphibious Dallasaurus, which was capable of swimming as well as walking on land, hints that mosasaurs evolved from early Cretaceous reptiles very similar in appearance to modern monitor lizards (another transitional candidate is the European Aigialosaurus). Less certain is the proposed evolutionary relationship between ancient mosasaurs and modern snakes; the two reptile families share sleek body plans, scaly skin and the ability to open their mouths extra-wide, but the rest is a matter of debate. In geological terms, one of the odd things about mosasaurs is that their fossils tend to turn up far inland, especially in the western United States and the interior of western Europe, along with other continents. In the case of the U.S., this is because, back in Cretaceous times, much of North America was covered by the Great Interior Sea (or the Sundance Sea, as its also called), a broad but shallow body of water that swamped large portions of modern-day Kansas, Nebraska, and Colorado. Kansas alone has yielded three major mosasaur genera, Tylosaurus, Platecarpus, and Clidastes. Mosasaur Lifestyles As you might expect with such a long-lasting family of marine reptiles, not all mosasaurs were in the same weight class or pursued the same diet. The largest individuals of Mosasaurus attained lengths of 50 feet and weights of 15 or so tons, but other genera were considerably sleeker: Tylosaurus, for example, packed only about seven tons into its 35-foot length, and Platecarpus (judging by its fossil remains, the most common mosasaur of North America) was only about 14 feet long and a few hundred pounds. Why these variations? Reasoning by analogy with modern marine predators, like the Great White Shark, its likely that bigger mosasaur genera like Mosasaurus and Hainosaurus feasted on their fellow mosasaurs and marine reptiles, while smaller species like Clidastes made do with relatively harmless prehistoric fish. And to judge by the round, pebbly shapes of their teeth, it seems that other mosasaurs like Globidens and Prognathodon specialized in gobbling down shelled prey, ranging from small mollusks and ammonites to larger (and tougher) sea turtles. At the time they went extinct, mosasaurs were facing increased competition from prehistoric sharks, a good example being Cretoxyrhina (aka the Ginsu Shark). Not only were some of these sharks sleeker, faster and more vicious than the likes of Tylosaurus and Globidens, but they may have been smarter as well. The mass extinction of marine reptiles in the wake of the K/T Extinction allowed sharks, the new apex predators, to evolve to bigger and bigger sizes in the course of the Cenozoic Era. The culmination of this trend was the truly enormous (up to 50 feet long and 50 tons) Megalodon.

I couldn’t remember what day of the week it was, but I was sure Jacob or school or work or something was waiting for me. I inhaled deeply, wondering how to face another day. Something cold touched my forehead with the softest pressure. I squeezed my eyes more tightly shut. I was still dreaming, it seemed, and it felt abnormally real. I was so close to waking any second now, and it would be gone. But I realized that it felt too real, too real to be good for me. The stone arms I imagined wrapped around me were far too substantial. If I let this go any further, I’d be sorry for it later. With a resigned sigh, I wrenched back my eyelids to dispel the illusion. â€Å"Oh!† I gasped, and threw my fists over my eyes. Well, clearly, I’d gone too far; it must have been a mistake to let my imagination get so out of hand. Okay, so â€Å"let† was the wrong word. I’d forced it to get out of handpretty much stalked my hallucinationsand now my mind had snapped. It took less than half a second for me to realize that, as long as I was truly insane now, I might as well enjoy the delusions while they were pleasant. I opened my eyes againand Edward was still there, his perfect face just inches away from mine. â€Å"Did I frighten you?† His low voice was anxious. This was very good, as delusions went. The face, the voice, the scent, everythingit was so much better than drowning. The beautiful figment of my imagination watched my changing expressions, with alarm. His irises were pitch-black, with bruise-like shadows under them. This surprised me; my hallucinatory Edwards were usually better fed. I blinked twice, desperately trying to remember the last thing that I was sure was real. Alice was part of my dream, and I wondered if she had really come back at all, or if that was just the preamble. I thought she’d returned the day I’d nearly drowned â€Å"Oh, crap† I croaked. My throat was thick with sleeping. â€Å"What’s wrong, Bella?† I frowned at him unhappily. His face was even more anxious than before. â€Å"I’m dead, right?† I moaned. â€Å"I did drown. Crap, crap, crap! This is gonna kill Charlie.† Edward frowned, too. â€Å"You’re not dead.† â€Å"Then why am I not waking up?† I challenged, raising my eyebrows. â€Å"You are awake, Bella.† I shook my head. â€Å"Sure, sure. That’s what you want me to think. And then it will be worse when I do wake up. If I wake up, which I won’t, because I’m dead. This is awful. Poor Charlie. And Renee and Jake† I trailed off in horror at what I had done. â€Å"I can see where you might confuse me with a nightmare.† His short-lived smile was grim. â€Å"But I can’t imagine what you could have done to wind up in hell. Did you commit many murders while I was away?† I grimaced. â€Å"Obviously not. If I was in hell, you wouldn’t be with me.† He sighed. My head was getting clearer. My eyes flickered away from his faceunwillinglyfor one second, to the dark, open window, and then back to him. I started to remember details and I felt a faint, unfamiliar blush warm the skin over my cheekbones as I slowly realized that Edward was really, truly here with me, and I was wasting time being an idiot. â€Å"Did all of that really happen, then?† It was almost impossible to reassign my dream as reality. So, about fourteen hours.† I stretched as he spoke. I was so stiff. â€Å"Charlie?† I asked. Edward frowned. â€Å"Sleeping. You should probably know that I’m breaking the rules right now. Well, not technically, since he said I was never to walk through his door again, and I came in the window But, still, the intent was clear.† â€Å"Charlie banned you from the house?† I asked, disbelief quickly melting into fury. His eyes were sad. â€Å"Did you expect anything else?† My eyes were mad. I was going to have a few words with my fatherperhaps it would be a good time to remind him that I was over the legal age of adulthood. It didn’t matter so much, of course, except in principle. All too soon there would be no reason for the prohibition. I turned my thoughts to less painful avenues. â€Å"What’s the story?† I asked, genuinely curious, but also trying desperately to keep the conversation casual, to keep a firm grip on myself, so I wouldn’t scare him away with the frantic, gnawing craving that was raging inside me. â€Å"What do you mean?† â€Å"What am I telling Charlie? What’s my excuse for disappearing for how long was I gone, anyway?† I tried to count the hours in my head. â€Å"Just three days.† His eyes tightened, but he smiled more naturally this time. â€Å"Actually, I was hoping you might have a good explanation. I’ve got nothing.† I groaned. â€Å"Fabulous.† â€Å"Well, maybe Alice will come up with something,† he offered, trying to comfort me. And I was comforted. Who cared what I had to deal with later? Every second that he was hereso close, his flawless face glowing in the dim light from the numbers on my alarm clockwas precious and not to be wasted. â€Å"So,† I began, picking the least importantthough still vitally interestingquestion to start with. I was safely delivered home, and he might decide to leave at any moment. I had to keep him talking. Besides, this temporary heaven wasn’t entirely complete without the sound of his voice. â€Å"What have you been doing, up until three days ago?† His face turned wary in an instant. â€Å"Nothing terribly exciting.† â€Å"Of course not,† I mumbled. â€Å"Why are you making that face?† â€Å"Well† I pursed my lips, considering. â€Å"If you were, after all, just a dream, that’s exactly the kind of thing you would say. My imagination must be used up.† He sighed. â€Å"If I tell you, will you finally believe that you’re not having a nightmare?† â€Å"Nightmare!† I repeated scornfully. Not because he was so many thousand times stronger than me, but because my will crumbled into dust the second our lips met. This kiss was not quite as careful as others I remembered, which suited me just fine. If I was going to rip myself up further, I might as well get as much in trade as possible. So I kissed him back, my heart pounding out a jagged, disjointed rhythm while my breathing turned to panting and my fingers moved greedily to his face. I could feel his marble body against every line of mine, and I was so glad he hadn’t listened to methere was no pain in the world that would have justified missing this. His hands memorized my face, the same way mine were tracing his, and, in the brief seconds when his lips were free, he whispered my name. When I was starting to get dizzy, he pulled away, only to lay his ear against my heart. I thought back over those last days of my life before he left me, tried to see them through the filter of what he was telling me now.
